Passwords and Policy Assistance
The information and communication systems used and/or operated by the school district provide the infrastructure for many critical, daily functions. Normal operation of these systems is highly dependent upon the effectiveness of the security provided through these systems as well as the secure practices of each user. While systems generally utilize a username/password mechanism to identify the user and their appropriate access, use of this information by other than the intended, assigned user constitutes a security failure and a potential misuse of the system. To minimize the potential for such misuse, please note the following with respect to ANY password-protected system that you use, including network servers, student/financial systems, instructional systems, phone systems, voicemail systems, etc.:
-
DO NOT give your password to any individual at any time. This includes family, friends, district techs, supervisors, administrators or any other trusted individual, and is a provision of the HLPnet Acceptable Use Board Policy and Administrative Directive (3520). If access to protected information is needed by these other individuals for vacations or sick leave, etc., the supervisor can request that access be assigned temporarily to another users account.
-
DO NOT enter any passwords or your voicemail code while in close proximity to, and plain view by, another individual. Password gleaning by wandering eyes is the most common method of password discovery. Request that the individual look away, turn their back or leave the room, if possible.
-
DO NOT write down or record your password.
-
DO NOT use passwords that are easily guessed or less than six (6) characters long. It is recommended that passwords include at least one number. Since passwords are case-sensitive, changing the case on alphabetic characters can increase the security of the password.
-
DO change your password if you suspect that someone has seen or discovered your password. Report this to the Help Desk by calling 626.933.1111 or sending an e-mail to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
-
DO change your default password immediately. Defaults passwords only exist to provide some common communication of the original password between NCS and the user. The default password schemes are easily guessed and are NOT secure. It is critical that default passwords be changed immediately upon assignment, including voicemail passwords.
If you require assistance with the changing of your password for any system, contact the Help Desk at 626.933.1111.
