Superintendent’s Message - 10/19/2011 Pertussis Requirement and Enrollment

This year a new state law required all 7th - 12th grade students to receive a booster shot against pertussis (whooping cough) within 30 days of the start of the school year.  Any new 7th–12th grade students must also receive the booster shot within thirty days of enrollment.

On September 23, more than 10,200 7th – 12th grade students fulfilled the requirement, whereas nineteen students did not complete the requirement and were excluded from school. As of October 12, all 7th - 12th grade students have completed the requirement, and no student is being excluded from school because of non-compliance with the pertussis law.

Pertussis causes a prolonged cough that can last weeks or months and can potentially result in pneumonia or hospitalization.  Teens easily can spread pertussis to younger brothers and sisters. This can become life-threatening – especially for infants under 12 months of age.  In 2010, whooping cough was widespread in California and was responsible for ten infant deaths.

Additional information (Whooping Cough Immunization Requirement for All Students) continues to beavailable on the District’s website.
